6 simple steps on how to hire staff

Hiring staff is often both an exciting and stressful point for many businesses. It takes a lot of time, resource and effort to find the right person for the job. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. If you’re a business ready to hire their first staff member or have a team already, take a look at these 6 simple steps in how to hire staff.

1.       Write a job description

To attract the right person, you need to understand the responsibilities of the job. Think about the regular tasks they will be doing, what kind of skills are required and what level of experience you are looking for.

2.       Get in touch with an agency

If you don’t have time or are unsure of how to recruit, the best thing to do is contact an agency like Hirestaff to guide you through the process. You can share information on what you’re looking for, the job description and other specifics and let them do the rest.

3.       Advertise the job

Once we know what the job is, the details of the job and a bit about your company, we will advertise the job through a variety of different channels. We have relationships with the major job advertisers which means we get a discounted rate on the ads versus someone advertising one role direct.

4.       Create a shortlist

As soon as the advertisement goes live, people will start applying. Depending on the type of job, you could get hundreds of applications, which take time to go through. Hirestaff can take care of this part of the process and will compile a list of candidates who could be good for the job based on their skills, qualifications and previous experience.

5.       Interview the shortlist

The shortlist are people that could potentially do the job. This is the opportunity to ask questions that are more detailed about their experience, test whether they could do the job and make sure they will fit in with the team. Ideally there will be someone that stands out who you want to offer the job to. Our account managers have experience in asking the right questions to find out whether someone is suitable for specific jobs – leave this part to us so you can focus on something else!

6.       Officially offer the job

It’s a done deal. The candidate is happy, you’re happy and the final step is get them to sign on the dotted line. Again, Hirestaff can take care of this for you, from the contract itself, through to actually paying wages. This is the stage where we’d agree the hourly rate, hours and other details about the job. We’ll put everything in writing and get them ready to start on site.
