Mental Health in Construction
Theconstruction industry has the highest rate of suicide across all sectors in NewZealand. Workers in our industry are six times more likely to die by suicidethan from a workplace accident. In Australia, that figure rises to eight timesmore likely.
Constructionand trades can be a tough gig - early starts, long hours, unpredictableweather, tight deadlines, and a culture that often prizes toughness overvulnerability. In this kind of environment, opening up or asking for help cansometimes be ridiculed or seen as weakness.
But thetruth is, everyone brings their own story to work. If someone is alreadydealing with stress, past trauma, or personal challenges, the added pressure ofa demanding job can take a heavy toll. Sadly, many men are conditioned tobottle things up and turn to alcohol, drugs, or gambling to cope instead ofseeking help.
That’s whyit’s so important to create a work environment where it’s safe to speak up, beheard, and get support.
How We CanAll Play a Role
You don’tneed to be an expert to help someone. Just being there can make a hugedifference.
- Listen actively - Focus fully on the person, without distractions.
- Create a non-judgemental space -Let people talk without fear of criticism or shame.
- Be empathetic - Try to understand what they’re going through.
- Know where to point them - Direct them to professional support when needed.
Start theConversation
A simple“How are you really doing?” can go a long way. If someone opens up:
- Let them speak - don’t interrupt.
- Keep it private - no gossip or judgement.
- Show that even small things matter.
- You don’t need to fix their problems - just listen and let them know they’re not alone.
